What Credit Score Do You Need for a Debt Consolidation Loan?
Score ranges, DTI limits and other options if a loan isn't in reach.

Short answer: There's no single cutoff, but many lenders want a score in the mid-600s or higher for a consolidation loan with a useful rate. Lenders also look at your debt-to-income ratio and income stability. Borrowers with lower scores may be approved at high APRs that defeat the purpose.

What lenders check
- Credit score: higher scores get lower APRs; below about 600 offers thin out.
- Debt-to-income (DTI): monthly debt payments divided by gross income. Many lenders prefer under roughly 36%–40%. Calculate yours.
- Income and employment: steady, documented income.
- Recent history: recent late payments or collections weigh heavily.
Improving your odds
- Pull your free reports and dispute errors.
- Pay down a card or two to lower utilization before applying.
- Prequalify with several lenders using soft pulls.
- Consider a co-signer only if they understand they're fully liable.
If you don't qualify
- Nonprofit debt management plan: no loan, so your score matters less. Free help.
- Credit union loans: sometimes more flexible for members.
- Avoid high-fee "everyone approved" offers and anyone asking for payment before a loan is issued; the FTC flags advance-fee loans as a scam.

Frequently asked questions
What credit score do I need for a debt consolidation loan?
Many lenders look for the mid-600s or above for competitive rates, though criteria vary.
Can I get a consolidation loan with a 550 credit score?
Possibly, but rates may be very high. A nonprofit debt management plan is often a better option.
Does prequalifying hurt my credit?
No. Prequalification usually uses a soft pull. The full application triggers a hard inquiry.
