How Long Should a Debt Consolidation Loan Be?
How term length changes your payment and your total cost.
By Michael Gonzales · Last updated

Short answer: Choose the shortest term whose payment you can reliably afford. Most consolidation loans run 2 to 5 years. Longer terms lower the monthly payment but add interest; shorter terms cost less overall.

How much to consolidate
Consolidate the high-interest debts the loan clearly beats, typically cards and some personal loans. Leave out low-rate debt like most auto loans and federal student loans (consolidating federal loans privately loses federal protections; see studentaid.gov).
Borrow only what you need to pay those balances plus any origination fee; extra cash tends to get spent.
Ways to shorten the term later
Pick a loan with no prepayment penalty and pay extra when you can. Even an extra $50 a month trims months off the end.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a typical debt consolidation loan?
Usually 2 to 5 years.
Is a 5-year consolidation loan a bad idea?
Not necessarily, but it costs more in total interest. Pay extra if your budget allows.
Should I include my car loan in debt consolidation?
Usually not if its rate is already lower than the consolidation loan.
