How Do I Compare Debt Consolidation Loan Offers?
A side-by-side checklist for comparing offers, without ranking lenders by who pays us.
By Michael Gonzales · Last updated

Short answer: Compare consolidation loans on APR (which includes fees), total repayment cost, term, origination fee and whether the lender pays your creditors directly. Prequalify with three to five lenders, including a credit union, and choose the lowest total cost with a payment you can sustain.
DebtHaus doesn't rank lenders and isn't paid by any lender on this page.

What to compare
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| APR | Includes interest and most fees; the fairest single comparison |
| Origination fee | Often taken from the loan amount, so you receive less |
| Term | Longer terms lower the payment but raise total interest |
| Total cost | Payment × months; the real price of the loan |
| Direct pay to creditors | Reduces the temptation to spend the funds |
| Prepayment penalty | Should be none |
| Hardship options | What happens if your income drops |
Where to look
- Credit unions: often lower rates; federal credit unions cap most loan APRs at 18%.
- Banks: existing customers may get rate discounts.
- Online lenders: fast prequalification; compare fees closely.
Low-interest loans: what it takes
The lowest advertised rates go to excellent credit, low DTI and solid income. If your offers are close to your card APRs, consolidation won't save much. Check what lenders look for or consider a debt management plan.
Red flags
Upfront fees before funding, pressure to decide today, and "no credit check" promises. The FTC warns about advance-fee loan scams.
